Sun, Sand, Cerveza
It's taken a while to get up the energy to write this post, as our last weekend adventure left us about as mellow as its possible to be with a pulse. Our last-minute plannning style again left us choosing our destination on Thursday night, our previously held plans of heading to Cahuita on the Caribbean coast with my host sister having fallen through. Since we're a lazy pair, and as our hearts were somewhat set on drinking cerveza on the beach listening to reggae, we decided to head to Puerto Viejo with a couple girls from our school. The fact that one of them was Ana (the little danish girl) had absolutely nothing to do with Tyler's decision.
We arrived in Puerto Viejo Friday night, to find a small rasta/caribbean town strung for a mile or more along an endless stretch of beach. Locating a hotel that would suffice, we dropped off our packs in the shed out back that they jokingly called a room, and headed out into the night to find some reggae. It didn't take long, as a local club (Bambu) holds Reggae Night every Friday. We grabbed some beers and walked down onto the beach adjoining the club, to listen to the waves crashing and look at the stars shining above the palm trees.
Saturday morning found us still asleep at 10:00, our reggae night having extended later than was probably wise. We searched for and found a place to eat breakfast, and decided at the end of it that today was going to be a beach day. The liquid heat of the place caused us to move slowly, and we finally made it to the beach 2 hours later.
After swimming and hanging out on a Caribbean beach for the day, we wanted to speed up the pace a little, and after dinner went out dancing. Johnny's Place had a large dance floor, and too many people, but we passed much of the night there.
Morning came, and we again traded adventure and excitement for sun, sand, and cerveza. A note of interest to those unaware: the sun in the Tropics is far stronger than the sun in Idaho, and maliciously decided to turn me bright red. Morning turned to afternoon, and we boarded the bus back to San Jose, tired and incredibly sweaty. 4 hours later, we were unceremoniously dumped at the station in San Jose, and another 40 minutes by bus brought us back to Heredia. A very uneventful, but restful weekend.
