Ladies Night

Heredia is the land of internet cafes. I swear there are over a hundred in a five block radius. Fortunately, they're incredibly cheap (one is 50 cents an hour). At the moment, I'm putting off doing my homework to come down here and post some of our recent adventures on the site.

Mostly, I attend classes and struggle to carry on conversations with my family. However, last night Tyler and I decided to blow off some steam, and accept an offer from my host sister to go out dancing. A couple of her friends were supposed to come with us, but at the last minute they had to stay late at work, and couldn't make it. (At least, that was my understanding of her explanation in Spanish. Either that, or they were on a bus that was hijacked by bank officials, I wasn't quite sure.) One way or the other, the three of us went out to a club located a little south of town. Passing up 'Hooligans' and 'Flamers' (probably not what you would think, just an unfortunate name), she instead chose 'Boombox'. Now, on Wednesday, 'Boombox' has an interesting event, known as 'Ladies Night', which varies a little from the nights of the same name in America. This particular incarnation was obviously thought up by one of the more ingenious and slimy club owners ever (although from what I hear, the 'Boombox' approach is pretty common here). Basically, there is a pretty large dance floor with a bar and a stage at one end, with all the usual acouterments: loud music, lots of lights, and too much fake smoke. Encircling the floor below is a balcony, where one can look out over the floor. All the men are required by the rules of the club to stay up on the balcony until 10:00, when they are allowed to go down and mingle with all the ladies, who are down below, drinking as much free alcohol as they want, and dancing. To stir up the mix a little, on stage they have this boy-band esque dancing troupe, which consists of about 5 guys with no shirts, oiled to their ears, dancing around in blatantly sexually suggestive ways. The girls are basically glued to this, cheering and enjoying themselves immensely. Meanwhile, the men are perched like pumas on the railings above, waiting for 10 to roll around, at which time they flood down the stairs and out amongst the waiting chicas. Obviously a man thought this one up. The only tactical error we found was that after the mixing occurs, they had a couple of female dancers come onstage in scanty outfits. All the girls spent the next couple of hours glaring at the girls onstage, and the guys couldn't look away.

Anyway, this place is closing.
